How Hex Dogging Works

Mechanical dogging allows a compatible panic device to remain unlatched during periods when unrestricted door operation is desired.

To dog a compatible device:

1. Depress the exit-device push pad.

2. Insert the 5/32" hex dogging key into the dogging mechanism.

3. Rotate the key as required by the device.

4. Release the push pad.

5. The push pad remains depressed and the latch stays retracted.

Reverse the procedure to return the exit device to normal latching operation.

This key is not intended for:

• Cylinder Dogging (CD) configurations

• Less Dogging (LD) configurations

• Exit devices without a hex dogging mechanism

• Fire-rated exit devices where mechanical dogging is not permitted

Mechanical dogging is generally provided on panic-rated exit hardware rather than fire exit hardware because a fire-rated device must be able to positively latch when the door closes.

Important

Verify that the existing exit device uses a 5/32" hex dogging mechanism before ordering.

Do not force the key into an incompatible dogging mechanism, as this may damage the dogging shaft or socket.
