Controlled-Descent Manual Door Operator | Integral Brake | Rolling & Sectional Door Retrofit
Improve the control and safety of manually operated commercial doors with the CONTROLGARD™ Chain Hoist, an advanced hand-chain operator featuring an integrated braking system.
Unlike a conventional chain hoist that may allow a rolling door to continue moving after the hand chain is released, the ControlGard system automatically engages its internal brake when the operator stops pulling the chain.
The result is a more controlled manual door operation that helps reduce uncontrolled descent, sudden door movement, and unnecessary wear on the rolling door system.
Key Features
-
Commercial manual chain-hoist operator
-
Integrated controlled-descent braking system
-
Door moves only while the hand chain is actively being operated
-
Brake automatically engages when the chain is released
-
Helps prevent uncontrolled downward door travel
-
Helps reduce the chance of the hand chain whipping upward
-
Allows the door to remain partially open
-
Approximately 3-1/2" side clearance required
-
Compact design with brake integrated directly into the hoist
-
Helps reduce abuse and wear on rolling-door components
-
Excellent retrofit option
-
Suitable for compatible rolling and sectional doors
-
No electrical power required
-
Designed for commercial and industrial door applications
Cornell states that the integrated brake is built directly into the chain-hoist mechanism and stops downward travel when the user releases the chain.
Integrated Brake System
The key feature of the CONTROLGARD™ is its integral brake.
With a conventional manual chain hoist, improper operation can sometimes allow the door to descend rapidly or cause the operating chain to move unexpectedly.
With ControlGard:
Pull Chain → Door Moves
Release Chain → Brake Engages
Door Stops and Holds Position
This provides the operator with substantially greater control throughout the opening and closing cycle.
Helps Prevent Uncontrolled Door Descent
The ControlGard system is designed to address one of the primary concerns associated with traditional chain-operated rolling doors: the possibility of the door moving downward after the operator releases the chain.
The internal brake restricts door movement unless the hand chain is actively being pulled.
This helps reduce the risk of:
-
Door slamming downward
-
Uncontrolled curtain movement
-
Chain fly-up
-
Operator mishandling
-
Excessive impact at the floor
-
Premature wear from abrupt operation
Holds the Door at Partial Open Positions
Because the brake holds the door whenever the chain is released, the opening can remain at an intermediate position without relying on a chain keeper to prevent the door from moving.
This can be especially useful when a rolling door needs to remain:
-
Partially open for ventilation
-
Open for limited material movement
-
Positioned at a specific working height
-
Temporarily stopped during operation
Cornell notes that a chain keeper may still be useful simply to keep the loose hand chain out of the opening.
Compact 3-1/2" Side Clearance
The CONTROLGARD™ Chain Hoist requires approximately:
3-1/2" Side Clearance
Because the braking system is incorporated directly into the hoist, there is no need for a large external governor assembly.
This compact footprint makes it particularly useful where side-room space is limited.
Excellent Retrofit Solution
One of the major advantages of the ControlGard system is its retrofit capability.
Cornell states that the braking chain hoist can be retrofitted not only to existing Cornell chain-operated rolling doors, but also to compatible chain-operated rolling and sectional doors from other manufacturers.
This makes it an excellent upgrade when an existing conventional chain hoist is:
-
Difficult to control
-
Worn
-
Damaged
-
Allowing excessive free movement
-
Being upgraded for improved operational control
Compatible Door Applications
ControlGard is offered for compatible:
-
Rolling service doors
-
Rolling steel doors
-
Rolling grilles
-
Insulated rolling doors
-
Commercial sectional doors
-
Security grilles
-
Warehouse doors
-
Industrial openings
Cornell currently identifies compatible products including its Service Door, Thermiser insulated doors, 5015 Rolling Grille, VistaGard, and VisionAire grille systems.
Improved Door Life
Controlled operation can help reduce the abuse commonly associated with rapidly operating manual rolling doors.
By preventing the door from freely accelerating downward, the ControlGard can help reduce stress on:
-
Curtain slats
-
End locks
-
Guides
-
Bottom bars
-
Barrel assemblies
-
Bearings
-
Drive components
-
Counterbalance systems
Cornell specifically positions controlled operation as a way to reduce door abuse and improve overall door life.
No Electrical Power Required
The CONTROLGARD™ is a manual chain operator.
That makes it particularly useful where:
-
Electrical power is unavailable
-
Motor operation is unnecessary
-
Door cycling is relatively infrequent
-
A manual backup or retrofit solution is preferred
-
Facility owners want greater manual-door control without installing an electric operator

CONTROLGARD™ vs. Standard Chain Hoist
Standard Chain Hoist
A traditional chain hoist may allow continued door movement if the chain is released or improperly handled.
CONTROLGARD™
The integrated brake engages when the chain is released, helping hold the door in place.
Benefits include:
-
Greater control
-
Reduced risk of rapid descent
-
Easier partial-open positioning
-
Reduced door abuse
-
Improved operator confidence
-
No bulky external governor
Important Compatibility Note
Before ordering, verify:
-
Existing door manufacturer
-
Door type
-
Existing chain operator
-
Shaft configuration
-
Available side clearance
-
Door balance
-
Counterbalance condition
-
Door weight and size
-
Mounting arrangement
-
Hand-chain requirements
The ControlGard can retrofit many chain-operated doors, but the existing opening should still be inspected for mechanical compatibility before installation.
Door Inspection Before Installation
A chain hoist should never be used to compensate for a damaged or improperly balanced door.
Before installing, inspect:
-
Counterbalance springs
-
Barrel assembly
-
Bearings
-
Shaft
-
Curtain
-
Slats
-
End locks
-
Guides
-
Bottom bar
-
Sprockets
-
Existing drive components
The door should move properly and remain mechanically sound before the operator is replaced or upgraded.
