Provide secure two-point latching with natural push-paddle operation using the Adams Rite 4781 Two-Point Deadlatch with Paddle.
Designed primarily for paired outswinging narrow-stile doors, the 4781 uses concealed vertical rods to secure the door at both the header and threshold. This allows both leaves of a paired opening to remain active without relying on conventional manual flushbolts to secure one leaf.
A modified Adams Rite 4591-style paddle provides intuitive interior operation—simply push the paddle to release the top and bottom locking points and continue pushing to open the door.

Two-Point Latching
Unlike a conventional deadlatch that projects horizontally into the jamb, the 4781 secures the opening vertically at two locations.
Top Locking Point
The top of the door uses a U-shaped bolt that wraps around a flanged strike post mounted at the header.
When engaged, the U-shaped bolt reaches a deadlocked position around the strike post.
Bottom Locking Point
The lower rod operates a:
Stainless-Steel Hexagonal Threshold Bolt
The bottom bolt requires only approximately a:
1/2" diameter hole
in the threshold for engagement.
Paddle Operation
From the interior, pushing the paddle:
-
Unblocks the top bolt
-
Withdraws the bottom bolt
-
Releases the two-point locking system
-
Allows the door to open as the user continues pushing
This provides a natural push-to-open movement.
Paddle Stroke
Approximately:
1-1/2" at the outer end of the paddle
The paddle is a modified version of the Adams Rite 4591 Deadlatch Paddle, designed specifically to operate the 4781 concealed vertical-rod mechanism.
Both Door Leaves Can Remain Active
A major advantage of the 4781 is its use on paired doors.
With many conventional pairs, one leaf must be secured using:
-
Manual flushbolts
-
Automatic flushbolts
-
Other inactive-leaf hardware
The 4781 allows compatible paired narrow-stile doors to function without permanently designating one leaf as the inactive leaf.
This can provide greater flexibility for:
-
Day-to-day traffic
-
Moving equipment
-
Wide-opening requirements
-
Commercial entrance operation
Adjustable Header Strike
The header uses an adjustable flanged strike post.
The strike provides generous adjustment to help compensate for:
-
Door sag
-
Minor alignment changes
-
Door bumpers
-
Installation tolerances
-
Normal wear
The top-bolt design also helps resist attempts to force entry by bowing or flexing the door.
Paddle Height Adjustment
Rod adjustment allows the centerline of the paddle to be mounted anywhere from approximately:
30" to 44" Above Finished Floor
This provides installation flexibility while allowing the vertical rods to be adjusted to the actual door height.
Standard Door Height Capacity
The standard 4781 mechanism accommodates up to approximately:
66" of door height above the paddle centerline
With the paddle mounted at the maximum standard height of 44", the standard system can accommodate doors up to approximately:
110" High
Always verify the actual opening dimensions before ordering.
8655 Tall Door Kit
For taller openings, the optional:
Adams Rite 8655 Tall Door Kit
is available separately.
The tall-door kit allows the mechanism to accommodate approximately:
97" above the paddle centerline
making the 4781 suitable for significantly taller narrow-stile door applications.
Paddle Dogging
The push paddle includes a dogging function.
Turning the hex screw in the paddle escutcheon holds the paddle in the depressed position, leaving the door:
Free Swinging
This is useful during business hours when unrestricted traffic is desired.
The dogging feature can later be released to restore normal two-point latching.
Exterior Operation
The 4781 can be configured as:
Exit Only
No exterior operating hardware is required when outside entry is not desired.
Keyed Exterior Access
For keyed exterior entry, the optional:
Adams Rite 8650 Cylinder Escutcheon
can be installed.
The 8650 accepts a standard:
1" long x 1-5/32" diameter mortise cylinder
with an Adams Rite MS® cam.
A compatible example is:
Adams Rite 4036 Mortise Cylinder
Cylinder and 8650 escutcheon are sold separately unless specifically stated.
3080 Entry Trim Option
The 4781 is also compatible with the:
Adams Rite 3080 Series Entry Trim
when specified in the configuration used for concealed vertical-rod devices.
The 3080 provides an exterior lever or pull-style entry solution for applications requiring outside access.
Concealed Vertical-Rod Mechanism
The concealed vertical-rod mechanism used in the 4781 is based on the system used in Adams Rite's 8600 Series Concealed Vertical Rod Exit Devices.
This provides a clean appearance because the operating rods are concealed inside the door stile.

Important Exit-Device Notice
The 4781 Is Not a Panic Exit Device
The Adams Rite 4781 is a two-point deadlatch with paddle.
It is not intended to substitute for a panic or fire exit device.
A compliant exit device requires a door-spanning push bar or pushpad where panic hardware is required by the applicable building or life-safety code.
Verify code requirements before specifying the 4781 for an egress opening.
